A global clinical trial has launched to evaluate whether the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) can protect front-line health-care workers against infection from SARSCoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — or reduce the severity of illness for those who do become infected. The trial aims to enroll up to 30,000 health-care workers worldwide and will be co-led by Michael Avidan, MBBCh, head of the Department of Anesthesiology.
To enroll, health-care workers must be age 18 or older and at high risk of developing COVID-19 due to potential exposures to patients with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Participants also must have a smartphone and answer weekly questionnaires via text message and monthly via text message or computer. Participation also involves self-administered finger pricks and if necessary, followup testing for the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
